3. The Other Man
Darkness sets in and the plot thickens…

JAY: "It’s my favourite song on the record because it’s the most collaborative — it’s Patrick’s chords, Chris came up with the melody, Andrew made up the little guitar riff that goes all the way through it and then I made the demo for it at home on my computer."

CHRIS: "It’s kind of like "Take It In" from SMEARED. But there’s no punchline or joke to it. It makes me embarrassed to talk about it — I’ve got such a reputation for being a smirking bastard, and when people hear this song, they’re kind of waiting for me to make fun of them for thinking it’s serious."

PATRICK: "Women really love this song — it’s a Harlequin romance."

I think Sloan sold out after Navy Blues. To me modern music is dead. I am happy with my old CD's... listening to the Super Friendz, and the Flashing Lights, and even Sloan's One Chord to Another.

Death to major labels and their oppression of creative license.

ok it works. some bugs here guys?

so... i'm a producer/engineer working mostly out of the CBC right now in toronto, on the AMS Neve Capricorn systems. i've been listening to your development over the past few years and congratulations! it even sounds great downloaded in MPEG!

"the other man" is pop genius and proves sloan to be a world class act.
congratulations and best of luck to you.
this business can be a bitch sometimes.

feel free to contact. i'd love to know more about what you're up to now?

it usually takes me like 12 listens to a song before I start to consider what the lyrics mean. So I finally did with this song and am blown away. It's a genious move to think to write a song from that point of view- and exectued perfectly. I just saw Sloan open for the strokes (who were lame) in Boston. It turned me on to Pretty Together more than I had been. But they should have played more tunes from Navy Blues. that album is like Abbey-Road-good. looking to develop a bigger fan base in Boston.

Just when I thought that today's music was going down the hole I turn to M2. I think it was right after a Ja Rule video cause I was ready to change the channel. Then it comes... that little intro, and then the rest just follows and I fall in. Amazing. Didn't listen to the lyrics, hardly ever do. I downloaded a few of your other songs, like them too. Buy it the next day. I've had the CD for a long time but it wasn't until this summer that I really listened to this words. And I have to say that I have never been able to relate to a song so much as I did this one. It makes me wonder who wrote the song and what they were going through. If it's at all possible, I would like to know. If I had to write an autobiography, I'd probably just copy down these lyrics. I know this sounds corny, but I finally found music that can touch me. Thanks, and keep rockin'!

Alright, I just noticed I even spelt "romantic" wrong. Even my spelling is bad...

Well, bed time.. nighty all :)

Hmm..

Well, he has the total right to make romanatic songs if he wants to. Besides, it's a song, it's not like he is describing it as it happened in reality. And, if this song was one of his personal ones, does it make a difference? Only I know is that it rockz ^ 2 heaven! :)

Sorry, I am really bad at grammar, I don't make sense half the time.. *Laughs.. well, I try to spill out what I want to say....

"The Other Man" has the most idiotic and irritating lyrics I have ever heard. What retard would whine about being 'the other man' and getting no sympathy? serves him right for intruding on another person's territory... the other man shouldn't even have the right to SPEAK nevermind sing a song - if someone is evil enough to put themselves in the position of being the 'other man' the last right they should have is whining about how unfairly they are being treated. get a life.

My first exposure to Sloan was seeing The Other Man video on Much Music. It's the best song I've heard in years - the CD was a must have and I love it. The Other Man is my favorite song - the guitar riffs make it one of the few songs that will stick in my memory forever. Luckily weeks after I bought the CD, while browsing the net for concerts, I found out you were playing at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Saw you the first night, (wish I had gone the second night too) - AWESOME performance and I loved the way you guys share the stage. I hope to see you guys play again very soon and very often. Can't get enough. Congratulations and best wishes. Thank you to Much Music for finally introducing me to this amazing band. Unfortunately, the buffoons at MTV, VH1 or my local radio stations are too ignorant and/or too lazy to discover how much great music is really out there, and are too busy promoting the no-talents like Britney Spears and her squeaky rivals (thank God for Shakira and Gwen Stefani who provide us with some relief from the torture). Sloan is my new favorite - I'm spreading the word. Michele, Greenwich, Connecticut, USA.

I was driving to work one morning and i heard this song on the radio www.kexp.org (sorry for the plug, its a wonderful station) and i was like "who the hell is this? ...wait is this sloan??" Then later I checked the online playist and saw it was in fact sloan. Living here in the states they dont get too much pub regarding releases (which seriously sucks!) imediately I went searching on the web for some info and i stumbled onto the pretty together site, and saw the video, I was excited to see it, along with the IIFGDI video. So this track for me was my intro to the album, glad i was listening to the radio that morning, and i think its a great song. Its a situation im unfortunetely in now.

I haven't read any interviews on this topic (and I may be opening a huge can of worms when I say this)...Chris's lyrics (and the way he sings them) are so entrancing (which is why 80% of the women out there love this song)...I am wondering if there's any autobiographical references in this song? I may be romanticizing the whole thing (in a sort of Clapton/"Layla"-esque way), but I was just wondering...

Hey Kathleen - to answer your question, no, Jay was not on the Junos, it was just Chris & Pat. Quite surprising, since Jay is usually more likely than anyone else in the band to appear along with Chris for TV stuff.

I'm just curious, why wouldn't you watch Sloan on the Junos? I thought a big fan like you would tune in for sure - I could understand if you didn't have cable & couldn't watch them on Much, but the Junos were on CTV!

Anyways, it was a cryin' shame that Sloan didn't win anything or get to perform, but their comedy bit rocked & they proved (yet again) that they're the coolest band in Canada. ;-)

Forget about the bettin' part on the looks of Jay! He will always to me, be very dazzlingly gorgeous man I will ever know!!
His so kool and has a really charmin' personality that a girl could ever want in a man!!
Wow, his a man I really want to have in my life! babyy yea!!

Yea I think so about the romance thing Pop Tart ;)

Nickelback stole Sloan's Juno??!! why those... GrRRrrrrRr. I wish I was there and give them a nice jab in the face for all the members, right in front of everyone!

I never seen the Juno's.. I never do!!
Anyways... wazzzzzzzzz sup?! with you Pop Tart??
Nothin' much here man. What did ya do Friday or Saturday night? I went to a "Good Time Music Rave"- It was pretty hot, and the DJ was too ;)- he can really DJ man!
Ya know what?? Theres this girl who is in grade 9 that was at the rave and we like started chattin' and then like, she mentioned that I would look really good havin' my nose periced. I really think I should, on my 18th birthday next November!- My parents probably won't allow me but, I will do it with my own money I could get if I have a part time job.
Well... I should stop ramblin' on here man, I should keep on workin' on my web page. Yea, I started it like a year a go and it wasn't and still is not goin' along too good. But, I am really tryin' to make it really different... possibly. beats me *laughs. Anyways, latez
Oh got to ask ya?- Was Jay at the Juno's ? If he was?- I bet his still is as hot & handsome as ever!

actually think they are funny....your video segment was one of the
highlights of the whole Junos...

tasteless jabs at other Canadian
hits was perfect.....

Oh MY Kathleen! Sounds like you've been reading one too many of those Harlequin romances Pat was talking about (see above). ;o)

Speaking of Pat & Chris - who saw them on the Junos tonight? Their little comedy segment in the school was cute & Chris is looking *foxy* - if any of my teachers had looked like him when I was in highschool back in the day, I would've made it my goal to never graduate...

Oh, needless to say, Sloan were robbed by Nickleback - so unjust!

Posted by pop tart @ 04/15/2002 01:10 AM EST

He Emmyj! wazzzzzzz sup?!!
Theres nothin' wrong in dreamin' about a guy like Chris. I dream about Jay mostly all the time man!

Did yea ask Chris a date once??!
That's cool. I don't even think I have da guts to ask Jay out.. maybe..if I did, it would be a time of his life!

Baby, I am just thinkin' now how wonderful it could be to get him to hold me into his arms and have my hair wrap around him abit and, to stare into his eyes. To gently, slowly lean inward to his kissable lips and passionately kiss him.. MmMmmMmm.. it's all just a dream. No, I don't want him cause I need him, I need him 'cause I love him! theres a difference.

Does anyone ever get a emotional effect that really wants you to be just lingeringly kiss a guy all night??- I get that ALL the time for Jay.
I know, I am too romantic girl.. I think alot of romance stuff.. at my age, which is 17, almost 18 is a hard time. I get love in my mind mostly all the time !!

Warmly place the palm of your hands on my cheeks and tenderly soothe them with such ease... bring the entire world into your eyes and, let me see the good in life and, take beyond of things into your heart so everything will be allright.
Comfort your loneiness with a touch of love, we all need some of that.
Look at each patch on a quilt and it will tell you what life is all about.
Follow each dream and maybe it could end up to be right with me.
Drown your broken heart and lift it up with a stronger one to hold onto.
Singnal a love boat and take it where it truly belongs.
Say the word "Yes", it may not be such a big word but, it means so much.
Carry what your true desires holds, you never know when and what will happen next.
If you want love, express it the best way you can, never keep it down deep where know one can find it.
Take a shot into something you think is right, it may end up to a very successful life.
Don't put a frown your face, you never know who is love with your smile.
Take the heights, some day you gotta anyways.
Lockin' somethin' up ain't doin you no good, try the opposite.
Follow where your heart takes you, what do you got to lose?
Be yourself, it's the best thing you can do.
Want a man? just say hi, and your allright.
Relieve the strikin' love pain that has been botherin' you, who wants pain?
Life to you may seem down but, wait until you experience it first.
Think of the good times your havin' in life, not the bad, it only takes you down.
Want peace? lets start that with you first.
If you get something wrong for the first try, never give up, theres allways a way out of it.
Believe in yourself, you got to, theres allways a time when you have to.
You have a love, keep the wheels on the road, try not to go off it.
Say the word "True" slowly and what can you get out of it?- "You" add I love....
Kiss is a sweet touch and, it can mean so much.
Fun is a word but love can be expressed more then just that.
Never give up on the good times, you allways have a state of mind.
You think figurin' a solution for a word problem is easy, try beatin' a true love!

~Peace*Love~

Actually, the more I think about it, the song brings back memories of asking Chris for a date some years back at the Palais Royale show, and how he nicely suggested I check with his girlfriend...I guess we've all been in one situation or another we regret...:)
Posted by emmyj @ 04/04/2002 04:20 PM EST

This song makes me want to cry every time I hear it. Too close to home, I guess, in some ways. Creepy too, because I had a dream that Chris was my professor and we were having an affair (?!)
Hey, I can't help what I dream...

This is my last resort..Everytime I watch the video for "The Other Man" I am convinced that the school that the video was shot in was the same school used for Degrassi High....When the boy enters the school, plays the piano in the halls, the random shots of stairwells..it drives me crazy...I have searched the internet and found no answers..please please if you have any information as to where this video was shot..contact me...IT LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE DEGRASSI HIGH! thanks

I love this music! It's great, but...
WHERE DO I GET GUITAR AND BASS TABS FOR THIS MUSIC?!!!
Posted by Peter @ 04/02/2002 04:53 PM EST

Of course I would rememeber the words during the show, I was screaming them on the top of my lungs (much to the chagrin of the people around me) (whata sloan word, 'chagrin')(note to sloan, put chagrin on the next album)
anyway, my mind did go blank, when I was talkin to Jay and Pat! I was like ....uh.....hey. my fav song is....you know...that one on the album with that other song I like? and Jay is reading off names of songs until I would say, yeah! that one! are you going to play it tonite? no. I'm sure they refused to play my fav songs cause I was such a dork. No I'm kiddin, they played most of them, except Snowsuit Sound and People of the Sky!

Its so funny watching Sloan screw up on stage, because it just makes you realise how true the music really is, not some manufactured crap coming out of some mega produced factory. Its endearing (wow another sloan word), and I think it brings the fan closer, we love sloan, as the old saying goes, warts and all. I remember reading an article after a sloan performance and the big shot music reviewing (who must have been prepared by doing previous reviews for the likes of Kim Mitchall, Celine Dion, and other ilk playing stadiums) tore them apart for not "clicking" for not being prepared for letting the fans down. He just didn't get it. Absolutley no one was even remotely perterbed (?) by it. I can bash music reviewers all I want, for I did it awhile myself, just search my name and you should find something. I think all reviews should be positive, because if you're not a fan, and not enjoying the show, what are you doing there in the first place? I guess thats enough ranting for now!

Posted by Aaron Shufletoski @ 04/01/2002 09:45 PM EST

*laughs. I read the whole thing so, I must have nothin' else to do.
:)

You have to be really smart to keep words in your head and have them remembered for a concert. If that was me, I would be blank like a sheet of paper, I'd forget which word came first.

Yea, Sloan rockz ^ 2 heaven!!

in response to lemon and zebrazingers commentary, I had the pleasure of meeting both Jay and Pat before their show at the UofC. I also found them most approachable, Jay sat down and ate his dinner at a table with a group of fans. I was feelin low before that, and I'll tell you, it perked me up right away! I noticed their live show was rusty, even some lyrics were forgotten, but I didn't care, it was awesome. As for "the other man" I was driving when it came on the radio (yeah I didn't have the cd, still don't) I stopped. I didn't know what it was, and I didn't want to ruin it by saying anything, I just knew in my heart that it was Sloan. I started trembling while I listened. It was that good. I rank it #2 on my list, the only reason People of the say is #1 is that it was the first song I ever heard by Sloan, and it made me stop also, and say Who is this??? And I've loved them ever since. Keep on rockin and rollin, And if anyone actually reads this whole thing, you must got nutin better to do!

Probably Sloan will be takin' tours back in Canada after their tours at England, Japan, Germany, and Australia. In May they could be, not sure. When they do start tourin' back in Canada, I am really goin' try get them to play here in Antigonish. Or try to get to the closest location they are playin' in Nova Scotia.... La8er.

I just picked up Pretty Together last weekend - I know... but after following Sloan since Peppermint I was really disappointed in Between the Bridges, and was hesitant buying the new album. After hearing The Other Man though I bought it the next day. It's interesting that Chris compared it to Take It In. I think it’s really smart lyrically and reminds me not only of Take It In but also I am the Cancer. I think The Other Man moves into my top 5 Sloan songs along with I am the Cancer and Take It In (and Pen Pals, Coax Me, I Can Feel it, Lines You Amend, G turns to D.... ok, there's too many for just five).

Great song – and I should never have doubted the new album!

p.s. Any plans for Sloan to play Ottawa in the near future?

Posted by Phil @ 03/01/2002 12:45 PM EST

Yea, "The Other Man" is constantly playin' at my local radio station(s).Hmm.. I should email that muchmusic station to play that video, eventhough I never seen it, and don't watch muchmusic. I'm goin' to do it.

Umm.. where are ya from lemonzinger?- I am here in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. It's kind of hard to get to a show or gig when they don't come no more. Yea, they once came here to Antigonish at ST.FX, yea the time when I was sick and not havin' a clue they came until my bro called me up to say they were here.
Can I ask ya a Q?- ah, are you a lass or lad?, sorry, I am just curious.
"Jay drops you a line"- Can I please know what that means, It is kind of hard for me to understand.

Oh yes, I am 200% sure he is a very, very apporachable young man.

How was the show? I bet it was totaly awesome!

Yea last thing :), you can call me Kathleen, I go by that, Mary Kathleen MacMaster is my entire name. Whats your name?.. *laughs.. sorry for askin' you questions here, okay...I'm zippin' outta here, later hun.

Jordan Chambers, your posting makes no sense. It's pure babble. There - now you don't need Chris to e-mail you himself. ;-)
Posted by nick valensi @ 02/24/2002 01:02 AM EST

Awww...Mary Kathleen, you've even got *me* hoping that Jay drops you a line, and I don't even know you! ;-) I met Jay last November after one of their shows & he was sooo friendly - trust me, if you could just make your way to the closest Sloan gig & hang out after the show, you'd meet him & see for yourself how approachable he is. Oh, and Chris is very cool too... Andrew seems very polite... Pat...uh, not so much...he's too busy drinkin'.

As for "The Other Man" - love the song, but the video is weak... I get that the concept is a "joke", but personally I don't find it that engaging as a video...

Posted by lemonzinger @ 02/24/2002 12:59 AM EST

Umm.. are you sayin' that the song disturbs you?- I don't know.
Anyways, about Chris emailin' you?-Yea that won't happen. They are in this situation where they won't email you, even if ya ask. I emailed the manager.. of Murderecords company so many times and once I think I asked if Jay could email me but, he told me Sloan won't email their fans.. something like that. I think you gotta be almost a friend of theres, thats the only way and, relatives of course. *Crys*, I wish I was a friend of theres, it be so cool I'm tellin' ya but, I suppose I am too young and, I live pretty far away from them *laughs. I can't even get friends here,so, *laughs, be pretty hard to have Sloan for pals. Anyways... ops, gotta zip.

I find it thoroughly disturbing. It centrifuges the contents of the spleen and then at the end of the song lets it all collect. It transcends and then it steals. It sucks. I want them to own up to writing a darkly beautiful tune about some mind crushingly disastrous fixation/catharticism, and I want Chris to email me cause he irritates me the most. Seriously, jordie@cyberbeach.net

I think thissong is grate. I think it one of the best songs on the album. I especeally like the music video.
Posted by monky_man @ 01/22/2002 11:49 AM EST

Love this song! From the very first time I heard it I was instantly attracted to it. I have been a Sloan fan for awhile, but somehow drifted away...this song has brought me back. I can't listen to it enough.
Posted by Jenn P @ 01/10/2002 02:14 PM EST

apparently a relic from c. murphy's short tenure in Fleetwood Mac. the lyrics are good, i suppose, but that chord progression- they're painting the line down the Middle Of the Road on this one. given the allegedly collaborative writing of this tune, i can only say that the whole seems to be less than the sum of the parts (or maybe lowest common denominator). maybe they've been hanging out with marc from platinum blonde or something. inexplicable.
Posted by slowworm @ 01/10/2002 07:22 AM EST

OK, Wow. i just watched the video for 'The Other Man'(actaully i watched it about eight times) and i loved it. I really, really did. I had already fallen in love with this song way back when i got Pretty Together, but this video really put this song up there. i mean, at first i didn't think 'the other man' would ever make my list of top 5 sloan songs, but it has... the video, i feel, has somehow improved the song, made it even nicer to listen to. Great work guys. and once again, WOW. =)
Posted by BEN @ 01/09/2002 11:03 PM EST

Just saw the video for "The Other Man" on this site & I'm a little disappointed... I was hoping my suggestion would be heeded & we'd get to see some "topless-Andrew" action! :) All jokes aside, the video made me wonder why Sloan are so stubborn about avoiding narrative-driven videos. Granted, videos that require band-members to act are often really cheezy literal interpretations of song lyrics, but I'm sure Sloan could've done something cool & interesting with "The Other Man". Even in videos with some kind of a storyline, like "EYDW" & "Good in Everyone", Sloan stick to just playing their instruments. Take a risk guys - we won't laugh (unless you want us to)! :)
Posted by pop tart @ 12/22/2001 12:50 AM EST

I have already commented on every song but now I see guys are getting slammed by the ladies for not liking this song, so I've got to say once again I love the lyrics and the truth behind the story of the man moving in on another man's girlfriend. It's a very honest song that's not all sapped up and crapped up like your top 40 boy band songs about the same senerio. Once again, Chris, excellent song writing!
Posted by Peter @ 12/04/2001 10:19 AM EST

again, one of the favorites. heck the whole album is awesome. and i don't know why so many guys hate it... well, it's a busy night for a super hero, i will return to the next sloan concert when they come back to my city.
Posted by The Flash @ 12/02/2001 11:25 PM EST

Probably my favourite song on the album, can't wait to hear it played on the radio.

Definitely 'tells it like it is'.

Posted by Timmerbo @ 12/02/2001 03:59 PM EST

With few exceptions, the people on the "Official Sloan Message Board" (at sloanmusic.com) seem united in their hatred for "The Other Man" -- but those people are, far as I can tell, mostly guys. Figures! Accusations of this song sounding all "Eighties" have been flying around that board. I beg to differ...

Change seems to frighten some people... Although, I have to say, if one were to put "The Other Man" up against a song like "Bells On", it would become obvious that Chris has been writing songs like this for a while -- maybe they've been overlooked because they're not the big "rawkin'radio tunes". That's why *I'm* so happy "The Other Man" is the next single! ;-)

Posted by isabela @ 11/28/2001 08:07 PM EST

How is it that all the ladies seem to love this song but most of the guys hate it? Are any of the guys a little insecure here? It's something everyone can relate to, and a little edgy as well, which in my experience is new, or at least rare w/ Sloan. Keep up the great work guys!! This whole album is great. Hmm. Well maybe except for 'Pick It Up And Dial It'. The sentiment is in the right place there, but to be honest I usually skip that track when I listen to the disc. Hurts my ears! Sorry Chris. :)
Posted by Gryphon @ 11/26/2001 11:03 PM EST

GREAT song! its not my fav. but its very catchy. this whole record is awesome, but it doesnt seem to seem like the sloan i know.. but it does rock!!! so keep it up guys...you rule!
Posted by Ker @ 11/26/2001 04:01 PM EST

Heh, heh... Matthew, have you not been following the sentiment in the previous posts? Chris singing "I know you've got a man in the picture but that hasn't stopped me yet" is a downright turn-on! I guess it's a female thing; we're enamoured with the idea of Chris battling for our love.
Posted by Ann @ 11/25/2001 04:16 PM EST

This isn't going to make me a very popular guy, but..."The Other Man" is my least favourite on the new LP and I'm rather shocked at it's recent 'single' status. Not that it sucks (it's quite solid and blessed with gets-under-your-skin lyrics); I just feel like this is standard Sloan...mind you, 'standard' Sloan generally rates an 11 in the music world, but on the Sloan meter it's about a 7. Geez, everyone seems to like this song A LOT--I just don't see the big deal about it being a single.
Posted by matthew edison @ 11/24/2001 05:36 PM EST

One word to describe this one: SEXY! Can't wait to see Chris do it again.

I love every song on this CD, and I think that it is their best so far. Each song is different from the other, and there is a song for every mood and occasion.

Thanks for the great music and great memories, guys!

Posted by Mary H @ 11/24/2001 02:59 AM EST

I'm pretty sure I read in CHART magazine that "The Other Man" *will* be the next single. I can hardly wait to see the video for that one -- hope it involves lots of Chris & Jay...

"The Other Man" changed my view of Chris forever, but in a good way. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved the Murph -- god bless his brilliant sense of humour, his clever-word play, his camera-hound tendencies & his sandal phobia. But he endeared himself to me as this hilarious ham & now he comes on all manly & "sexed-up" -- crazy! But cool... It adds depth to his character, makes him all "complex", all "darkness and light" and such ... ahaha... perhaps i've said too much.

So, yes, looks like this is the much-deserved, much-anticipated next single & I can only hope the video lives up to the one I've made up in my head! (Hint: it might involve a gratuitous shot of Andrew topless). ;-)

great collaboration boys. creepy, mysterious and true. highway to the danger zone.
Posted by jenny s. @ 11/17/2001 12:29 AM EST

I don't think I need to hear that song to want to do Murph.....hahahahahahah....thats a goo 1,chris the "STUD".But none the less, good tune, great lyrics.Peter Skov, doesn't it make u sick that bands like the back street boys make all that money and a band like sloan has 2 struggle? A few other bands come 2 mind also, thrush hermit(or joel plaskett),flashing lights, mike oniel, korn(just kidding).all the other good bands that i like broke up,go figure
Posted by the penguin @ 11/07/2001 10:16 PM EST

oh man....this is a boom-diggy of a song guys!
SLOAN + 13 x 8 - 2 = pickles....
Posted by alexiscelerysoupinder @ 11/03/2001 11:11 AM EST

You hear sappy boy bands like the Buttstreak Boys (sorry, typo) singing about how they would make a better boyfriend for a girl who's dating someone else, but the truth is, guys who think like that are 'the other man'. This song is a brilliant look at the truth about wanting someone who is with another. 'I know he's a standup guy/ But that's none of my concern,' and 'No one's routing for me,' are lines that tell it like it is.
Posted by Peter Skov @ 11/03/2001 12:42 AM EST

I don't think I need to hear that song to want to do Murph. ;) Anyways, The Other Man is definitely my favourite tune off this disc - I have it in my head constantly.
Posted by SomeChick @ 11/01/2001 09:24 PM EST

Ian, you are soooo right HEHE I really like this song. It's a differant side to Chris. A big change from songs about Not getting the girl. The song G->D makes me wanna do Chris...:)
Posted by Sizzleteen @ 10/31/2001 03:37 PM EST

Ian, you are soooo right...
Posted by Ann @ 10/31/2001 01:25 PM EST

This song should be huge. Sloan have gotten old (let's face it) with style. Every female in the Kool Haus should have wanted to do Chris Murphy listening to him sing this one.
Posted by ian @ 10/29/2001 12:20 PM EST

Best song on the album. My favorite by far. Ranks up there with my old time fav's. Really upbeat. The song that jumped out at me right away. I would say that it is definately a "Friday drive home from work song".
Posted by Andy @ 10/25/2001 05:01 PM EST

Wow! That was the first word that came tomy mind when I first heard "The Other Man". It's one of the most beautiful songs that I've heard in a long time. It definitely my favourite Sloan song. The music is incredible, the guitars are brilliant, the lyrics are ace, and Chris' voice is enchanting. Definitely single-worthy.
Posted by Sheila @ 10/23/2001 11:45 AM EST

It's almost embarrassing how much I like this. The guitar riff is driving me crazy... sounds like the Church but I can't quite put my finger on it... what is its origin? Its'a very clever & plaintive little song & it makes me feel sad & nostalgic but I'm not even sure why...
Posted by kat @ 10/23/2001 10:46 AM EST

This is a follow-up to my comment from last week. I still love this song, but I am so impressed by the whole album. It's so deep. You have to listen to the lyrics of each song a few times to fully appreciate them. I am a biased Sloan fan, but it does grow on you more with each spin. Don't do what I am doing and play it to death though!! My wonderful new Nickleback C.D. hasn't had much of a look-in this week.
I think this band has such a wealth of song-writing talent. This song just haunts me and like some other contributors, I don't know why. Maybe Erin hit the right chord in her comment............
Posted by Lynn @ 10/22/2001 08:45 PM EST

The song is amazing. I can't lisiten to it enough.
It reminds me of my dad when he cheated on my mom.
Posted by 7'4" 520lbs @ 10/22/2001 04:34 PM EST

Though I hate to contradict Patrick, I don't think the song's appeal to women makes it a "Harlequin romance" so much as...well, women just like the idea of cheating on our S.O.'s with Chris. Basically.
Posted by Erin @ 10/20/2001 02:01 AM EST

what can i say
truly a sloan tune!
all out sloan...
excellent
Posted by Wesley @ 10/19/2001 05:29 PM EST

This is a gem...and one of my favorites on the new CD. The lyrics are all there, and the vocals are stirring. Simple, yet powerful. I think everyone can relate to this tune...well done guys. In my humble opinion, this should be the second single off of 'Pretty Together'. Keep up the good work, and come back to the East Coast soon!! Cheers...Pete
Posted by Pete @ 10/18/2001 10:37 PM EST

Chris does a great job on this one, it's a rockin' one. I've never heard chris write a tune like this. But I like it, I have high hopes for it, for sure.
I'd say this album is a cross between Smeared and Twice Removed/One Chord To Another. don't know why.

Posted by sarah/ash @ 10/18/2001 08:16 PM EST

I would have to say this is the best on the album... It will do very well I would think if it is released, which seems likely since Chris said, "we have high hopes for this one" at the show. I was also fortunate enough to see Sloan on tuesday here in Ottawa, what a show, I liked the Skiing footage on screen... anyway, what a great tune, Good job guys...
Posted by Evan @ 10/18/2001 01:28 PM EST

So far, my favourite song on the new album. I saw 'The Guys in Ottawa last night and when Chris started to sing this one, the guy stood beside me commented, "I wish they would play something good. I mean listen to this."
I thought that that was pretty sad. Go buy the C.D. man and take time to really listen to some of the new stuff.
A move in the right direction. Chris hinted that it may be released. I really hope so. It just stands out. I lovce it.
Posted by Lynn @ 10/17/2001 09:38 PM EST

I find the more I listen to this song the more i love it. the simple drum beat in the verses along with the guitar make this song. One thing i have really loved on this album is the choice of vocal effects sloan decided to use good job boys!!
Posted by Kevin Ogilvie @ 10/17/2001 04:06 PM EST

This song reminds me of something from my childhood. I don't know what it is. A feeling, or some happy memory. Whatever it is, it's good. Thanks.
Posted by Nav @ 10/17/2001 11:56 AM EST

worst song on the album. this album is so great but this song stands out as a great big wart. a low point for chris.
Posted by will @ 10/13/2001 01:40 PM EST

Yeah, I really love this song - kudos to the Duke Street comparison, Kash - I thought exactly the same thing - that and early Grapes of Wrath. I like it also 'cos it seems out of the usual Sloan genre - didn't expect anything to sound like this - a pleasant surprise.
Posted by Munkeeboy @ 10/11/2001 05:37 PM EST

I've never thought of Chris's songs as cynical or smirky, and I don't know any other Sloan fans who do, either. "The Other Man" is definitely intriguing and cool, however...
Posted by Elizabeth Ivanovich @ 10/11/2001 12:39 AM EST

Seems a lot like a late 70's Little River Band song. I kind of think it is kewl. It has that breezy sound thing going on.
Posted by fritz @ 10/09/2001 02:44 PM EST

80's Retro. Very uninspiring and unoriginal.
Posted by JP @ 10/06/2001 10:43 PM EST

this song is so 80's it hurts. and i don't mean cool 80's like weird al yankovic either.
Posted by carlito @ 10/06/2001 03:55 AM EST

Amazing, Sloan embracing the sound of the '80's... Almost sounds full circle, when you consider that the "Icks Nay..." demo to "Coax Me" sounded like latter-day Duke Street Records (anyone remember that label?), whereas this one sounds like early-day DSR... Sloan nodding to Chalk Circle? Makes me smile even more. Yes, this group is Canadian. :)
