4. Dreaming of You
The sweet sound of a heart being ripped out, one artery at a time.
JAY: "There was definitely a lot of melancholy songs to choose from, and for a while during recording, that’s almost all we had. What can I say, it’s been a hard year!"

| Hmmm. "incident" as I putted, sounds more like a "minor event" which wasn't so, I will say a scathful struck...

| It does sound realated to the Sept.11th incident.
"...You, I dreamt the seven towers Were slowly falling down"
Which kind of strange how he writes: "...Then again I can wait 'till next September.." "September", was the crash.
But then again, it isn't really related to that day, just a coincidence.
Besides all that, the song is romantically written.
Wooooooooo way 2 go Jay!! You're my best song writter & singer going!!! And Sloan put together of course :)

| This is one of the creepiest songs ever written. As you know it was written before the attacks on America last year, yet it has chilling lyrics that tie into the terrible events of that day. Read the lyrics with Sept. 11th in mind. Its creepy. |

| I live in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Where abouts are you at? :)

It could have been anyone. She hadn't thought another thing when she stepped up to the curb to stand behind a straight haired blond guy with a guitar case hanging casually from his hand, the shoulder strap loose and trailing to the pavement. In fact, she hadn't paid attention at all to the strap as she stepped up beside the man to wait for the light to change. Her mind was chasing daydreams through the glinting sunlight on the windows of the tall bank across the street. The signal changed while she was lost in the haze of her private world. A voice arrested her from her reverie. "Excuse me..." She looked up to the speaker and with a jolt her heart leapt to the back of her throat, bounced violently into her spine and slammed forward into her rib cage with such a force her throat constricted her gasp of surprise. Of all people she had stood next to, this was the man of all her wistful fantasies. Sloan's Jay Ferguson was looking down at her with his lips (those lips she'd dreamed of kissing for countless nights) turned into a gentle smile. His soft eyes melted her. The whole phenomenon of his sweet face glowing warmly down upon her, the refracted sunlight lighting up his features, erased the very existence of everything around her. The universe was in Jay's eyes. His lips moved again and he spoke, "You're standing on my guitar strap." Oh, yes indeed. What sweet sounds flowed like the essence of honey on warm spring breezes. The words danced through her ears and mezmerised her senses. 'Excuse me, you're standing on my guitar strap.' Could God have not created a more blissful vibration through the city breeze. What those few words did to her. Those... how many was that? 1, 2, 3, 4...5... 6, 7, 8! Those eight words! And those eyes. The words and those eyes together sent her to a place of suffused white light, creamy clouds and the chiming of heart strings. "Uh..." He spoke again! Well, actually it was a sound, not really a word. But still what more did he want to say? She saw his eyes look down. To what? Suddenly a wave of alarm swept over her. What had he noticed? Was there a loose thread on her skirt? A run in her nylon? A pigeon dropping on her shoe? Dear God, how embarrassing! Was she here now with Jay Ferguson and he was about to point out something completely embarrassing? She dared not look down. What would she find? Her face must look terror stricken. He must sense her panic. With tremendous resolve she forced herself with a sharp snap of her neck to look down. There were no loose threads, no runs and no droppings. Only her foot standing on... on... on a loose strap leading to Jay's guitar case. Guitar strap! The words screamed at her like a winter storm and dashed her dream world in streams of dust then whipped them into a frightfully black abyss. Her mind rushed to escape the steamroller of fear bearing down upon her. Her senses hurtled back to reality and with silent smack she was seeing herself in the vivid present, standing there with one careless foot tredding upon Jay's strap. The reflex appology tried to squeak out of her constricted throat but instead she swallowed her breath and made a queer peeping sound. Her foot raised by some unconscious power. Jay smiled a thank you, turned and fell into the crowd like another person on the street. He was gone. She stood in stunned silence.
...blah, blah, blah And so the sad life of Jay's groupies goes on with the unwavering faith that someday, when the time is right, Fate will do its thing.
I'm teasing you MacMaster. Really I think you're a sweet kid with her heart in the right place. Love Jay. Be happy. |
| *laughs! Slowworm. I put the CD in and realizin' that the only song I repeat for more than 2 hours is "Dreaming Of You" hehehe. After realizin', I repeat the song "Who You Talkin' To?" for another hour or so... :)) than, "Are You Giving Back My Love?" .. It's like, the only songs I repeat more often than any other song on da album.
*Laughs, I am slave to the songs, I can't get enough of them, I need a doctor please!!! A good one too. :))))) I guess it's the stage of beein' a Sloanie fan, eh? *laughs. I enjoy beein' a part of fanatic fan. *Laughs, I hope my batteries can keep rechargin', the amounts of time I use on rewindin', I don't know.. lol! :)))

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TRACKS ON THE NEW ALBUM. I LISTEN TO THE NEW ALBUM ON THE WAY TO WORK EVERY DAY AND I CANT GET ENOUGH SLOAN!! ITS A SHAME THAT SLOAN CANT GET DOWN TO HOUSTON TO DO A SHOW, SO MAYBE I'LL TAKE A ROAD TRIP UP NORTH!! I HAVE ONLY SEEN THEM ONCE, ON THE UNDERWELMED TOUR, YET THEY REMAIN MY FAVORITE BAND. |

| Another bittersweet winner from Jay! Have to agree with the person who surmised that "the number 1 followed by the 9" refers to the "object of affection" being a 19-year old -- my sister was the first to point it out to me, and in light of that possibility, lyrics like "these conditions make me restless" & "I wonder if a year or 2 will matter" make sense. Like "The Life of a Working Girl", this song has a melancholic feel that I think really adds depth to the (already deep) Sloan catalogue.
Thematically, the lyrics remind me a lot of Weezer's "Across the Sea", where Rivers Cuomo seems to be pining for a young fan "across the sea" who writes him letters, & he ends up telling himself "I could never touch you, I think it would be wrong. I've got your letter, you've got my song." Ahhh, the pathos! Anyways, another great song from the always-consistent Jay! |
| I am not sure why anyone would not like this song. Jay, thank you for writing this song, that picks up where Pat's voice left off on "I Can Feel It" What I got out of the song is exactly what I have been going through, that whole long distance relationship and how it is sad but in your heart it will work out. It puts it into an interesting perspective...though I hope it works out a bit differently than Stephen Malkamus's "Jenny and the Ess-Dog"
Mike from Buffalo p.s. can't wait to see you guys at the tralf....and if you can dedicate this song to Lauren, much appreciate it... |
| As usual I find Mr. Ferguson's songs to be the most musically accomplished and this tune is quite possibly (in my meaningless opinion) one of his very best to date. I get chills every time I listen to his closing line "You, I wish I knew you better", followed by the perfect 2 chord finale. To sum up the song in a word; Beautiful. |
| Skov, you really broadened my horizons just now. My initial interp of the cryptic "number one followed by the nine" was that it must something to do with a bus schedule because I'm a really unromantic person. Then I figured it meant the first of September because I'm one of those perverts who writes dates out "backwards" -- i.e. "1 September" -- and, again, really unromantic. It's such a good thing Jay's writing the songs and not I. *Swoon.* |
Jay has always been a favourite of mine ever since 'Pretty Voice' but this song takes the cake and the whole bakery! There's such sweet sadness in those beautiful melodies, and the backing guitar notes with the bending note are blissful. How to write simple guitar that sounds like angel song. BTW, is the object of affection in this song 19? If so, nice twist. 'I can wait til next September'. |
| Finally Jay's back to his Snowsuit Sound/Lemon Zinger days. We've been waiting a while. |
| This one sort of sneaks up on you. After a few spins it's definitely one of my favourites. The key changes and arrangement are killer. Didn't think they could surpass BTB, but I was wrong. (as usual) |
hey. Jay is totally kickin' ass! woo hoo!!!!!! I always luv Jay, and this song is really good. great work. take it easy, sarah/ash Toronto, Canada |
| this song is great. the olny realon why the other commenters don't think so is because thay have not hheared the intire song. |
| I think I already said this in another thread, so I won't repeat it here. But again, well composed, well written. Not my cup of tea. |
| All right, here I was wondering what to think of this song..."hardly seems appropriate." That does it. That one line right there makes the whole thing brilliant. It's on the "good" list. Because of the phrase "hardly seems appropriate." |
| sloanteddy, Chris is my fav, but i do like jay also.I'd rather listen 2 ne sloan song then nething else thats being played these days
The more i listen 2 this song, the more i like it. |
| This is a great song -- definitely a reflection of Jay's fine works. I can very much hear hints of a Beach Boys influence in this song. Nice job. |
| i think that this is an awesome track!!! it is one of my favourites! it reminds me of the summer. i can't wait to hear it live! |
| Hey, Sloan are still in Rock N' Roll music. Just because their music is a little bit softer in tone doesn't mean anything. Look at some of "The Beatles" music. They all weren't into crashing drums and loud beat all the time, No, they were into the soft tune also. I think the side of Rock ain't all about loud music, It's about the hard work they have put into for us.. Sloany fans. Please give them lots of credit for these lads, they are trying their very best and, I appreciate it too.

-Mary Kathleen Mac Master |
| The song, MK. It just doesn't do it for me. |
| Whats yuck JP.? The song or, me mentioning about Sean Lennon.?
-Mary Kathleen Mac Master |
| Who is your favourite Sloan member Penguin.? Mine would be Jay. Not over by liking him in all but, the soft melody music he creates. Its allmost like Sean Lennon's tones. :)
-Mary Kathleen Mac Master |
| Jay isn't my favorite member because i like the more rockin kinda tunes, but it's good 4 a mellow song |
| Two!!! songs that sound like they came from the '80's, in the best of ways. The sound is truly reminiscent of summer nights, driving down the strip at sunset. Makes me wonder if anyone else noticed a trip forward from the late '60's to more recent times, starting with "One Chord to Another"... (Navy Blues - early '70's, Between the Bridges - late '70's, Pretty Together - early '80's). I'm really looking forward to October 16th. :D |
| Telcontar, Deception Rumble!! *laughs!. Nice to see you guys here, I think ;). Seemly everywhere I go you follow. I'm here to chat to other Sloany fans that could be new around here. Did you guys trace me with some blood hound dogs. ? :)) Oh, DR, you allways got to reply something about moi having endearment for Jay. Shhh, Lower it down, would you.? Heehee. |
| Look out, Jay. This girl has the hots for you. |
| Like I experience in life. As Jay replied.. everyone has some melancholy. By a lost of a loved one in the family, depression of life all together, missing one you love very much. All of this is part of melancholy. When I am down about on everything, I write a soft poem or a song about adversity. Anything that brings me back the good memories of something. It may have become a terrible thing that happened but, writing a poem or a song can make the worse into the good side of the situation. Like.. Umm. If your husband/wife wanted to get into a divorce and it came out to be. Well.. you clearly see the bad side of it but,you can make it good by looking back to the cheerful things you have done over those years you have been together. Like I would say, "Don't let the breaking heart lines come free in things when things are going rough" Meaning.. Don't split your heart into pieces over something that can put you down, you should seal that heart and try to forget the bad things that occured and replace those with the good ones. Life can be a wonderful place if you want to make it that way. Try not let your feelings drop like water. Sure, you can cry and let out your anger but, don't put that on top of you too long 'cause, you'll be blaming yourslef for things that really wasn't your fault to. Be happy as much as possible no matter how bad things are in your life. Put a smile on your face and light up that dark room you allways wanted to see. :)) |
