5. Pick It Up and Dial It
Real rock ’n’ roll revolution — order now!

CHRIS: "I stole the title from a line in one of Patrick’s songs on TWICE REMOVED, "Worried Now," that he changed at the last minute. It’s a total Paul Stanley song. But I believe in it, too — we officially, without irony, like rock ‘n’ roll music."

niggaz? That is a racist word if you translate it to it's real spelling. I dislike the thought of someone beeing racist...

Anyways Russell, I know you have you're right of opinion on the song but, I just can't figure out how a truly Sloan fan would end up hating a song(s)?

Give them credit for taking their own time to come up with and write the songs and, to rehersal it all. And taking the time making touch ups. And may I say all the other things I don't know about creating music. Just think of something YOU have down in your time that took forever to do? And how proud you would be when you're finished it all. Thats probably how Sloan feels when they make the creation of each album. I know I would be.
Not that alone but others would feel proud for you, like I do for Sloan. I am so happy for them, I can just kiss them all on their lips. And, keep a nice soothing, warm, grasping kiss to those lustful lips of Jay's :)
MmMmMmmmMMmm.. I am day dreaming there :)
Anyways, I... Ohh Lord the thought of just staring into his liquid eyes and feeling his silky hair and soothe his smooth face, and a kiss so irresistible.
Okay, I think I should go. :)

Hmmm... upon first listening to this song i kinda hated it... then it grew on me for a while but now i don't really like it. Mainly the fact they dabbled with pro-tools a bit too much in this song and also... it seems that all Sloan seem to be doing is preaching about Rock n' Roll and how they're here to save it. It's good n' all but it's like a rapper saying "we're here to f*ck sh*t up for all u niggaz out there" y'know? Sloan are a GREAT band but a few tracks on this album are too "preachy" about rock n' roll. I hope their newer effort will be produced with less digital trickery and not as many songs claiming they're here to save rock n' roll.

One of the things I've always thought makes Sloan absolutely brilliant is that they have more than one sound. Different Sloan songs can appeal to different audiences. I'll bet most acts would appreciate having the ability to cross lines at will.

This song and "The Other Man" are both incredible, but in different ways. Anyone who'll walk out of a Sloan show over one song should stick to bands who bring the same sound every time out (ABBA comes to mind...).

Ah, rock'N Roll can never be dead.
Well.. when this earth ends its dead, certainly :)). But for now, it's rock music will keep rollin' into gear. New generation music COULD cover rock'N Roll for somethin' else, perhaps to somethin' better.. Who really knows until it comes to that day. Rock is just a different type of music compared to rap, alternative, Funk, House,Jazz, Fiddling etc.. Can we overcome which is better?- Rock or Rap or maybe Funk or Jazz?- It all depends on each and one individual
We can't really say which is the hit list 'cause everyone has their own taste.

Well, I'm not keen on this song - but, I can appreciate where it's origins are from - I grew up on Kiss & AC/DC, so anyone who can pay homage to some of the roots of kick-ass hard rock gets big props in my book!

a lot of people seem to hate this tune. i think somebody fiddled around with protools too much here because although the basic riffery and so forth is good, there's all sorts of distracting weak crap on the cd version (that descending arpeggio thing is a complete energy vacuum). i'm sure this is great live and hopefully the next record will have less pointless digital tweakery. put that mouse away!
Posted by slowworm @ 01/10/2002 07:32 AM EST

Anyone who trashes this song hasn't heard it live. I liked it before, but it was admittedly not one of my favorites. After seeing Sloan in Ottawa, and hearing this song live I hate the CD because it doesn't do the song justice. This maybe isn't such a great track on the cd but it is worth going to see Sloan JUST to hear this live.
Posted by Mark @ 01/01/2002 10:42 PM EST

This song is the essence of ROCK.
Posted by Ryan @ 12/27/2001 03:01 AM EST

When I first heard that Sloan were feeling all "nostalgic," and now officially like rock and roll "unironically," instead of smart-assedly, I was skeptical. But now I'm a believer.
"They say rock and roll is dead again - you tell me if it's true!"
It's not true, Chris!!!!!
Posted by ian @ 12/18/2001 11:01 AM EST

Oops, just read the above comment from Chris Murphy about this song. Apparently, no irony was intended. My mistake. I'm thinking that the value of this song is lost on me because I didn't grow up listening to AC/DC & KISS...
Posted by hello kitty @ 12/02/2001 05:51 PM EST

Okay, add me to the group of Sloan fans who have to skip this track on PT. Did Chris intend for it to sound as if his vocal cords are bleeding? This can't be good for his voice!

In his defense, "Pick it Up & Dial it" could very well be a song that Chris did to be all "tongue-in-cheek" or something, but clearly, lots of people aren't "getting it". Thankfully, Chris more than redeems himself w/ the rest of his songs, which are *stellar*. After "The Other Man", "Life of a Working Girl" & "I Love a Long Goodbye", he's earned the right to pen a song like this one - even genius has its "off" days! ;-) Chris, you're still the man, but leave this kind of song to Patrick "Money City Maniac" Pentland...

"Earsore", that's a great word...

Posted by hello kitty @ 12/02/2001 05:46 PM EST

Martin - Your Kim Mitcell accusation was alarmingly correct. That might explain why I don't like this song all that much. My sister seems to like it but I was like, "God, skip to track 6..." Really the only song I don't like on this album, oddly enough some of the 'girlier' fare like 'Are You Giving Me Back My Love' has really grown on me, definitely more than this 'rock n roll tune'. It's just an earsore.

ChrisM, great call on the song tonight...well worth it, thanks.

It was great to see you dudes again, the last time was at Dal a few years ago and the Birdland a few years before that. It was great to see the "local" support and New England contingent tonight - great work.

Say hi to Allison for me.

This song cracks me up. People seem to rip on it, but if Ween wrote this one, it would be considered brilliant...

Rock on Sloan

the previous comment brought to us by tony s. is comedy. word.
chris, i'm confused and uncomfortable playing it for my friends. sorry bro.
Posted by jenny s. @ 11/17/2001 12:23 AM EST

It's been 1 month since I bought the new cd. I love every track except this song. I honestly tried and tried to understand it but it still sounds really bad. I hope the boys don't play this song when they hit the states. People might pick up and leave the club. Why did you have to include it on the cd. I'm trying real hard to push the cd to everyone I know because it's the best cd yet but this song makes it a hard sell. Okay enough about this crappy song, the rest of the cd is pure magic. Sorry Chris.
Posted by Tony S. @ 11/16/2001 10:52 PM EST

After reading all the feedback I'm going to explain why I personally don't like this song.
Chris has a habit of singing in a key too high for him. He's admitted that himself. That's the reason why I don't like "She Says what She Means"... to me, it sounds like he's straining his voice too much, and I can't get over that. I've listened to "Pick it up and dial it" a few times with an open mind, and I like the guitar riffs, but I just can't stand the key Chris is singing in. It sounds unnatural for him, and the repetitive "People, people" is just annoying, in my opinion. I don't mean to offend anyone, I just REALLY don't like this song. But hey, to each his/her own. :)

Poor chris is taking a beating 4 this song :)I dont really like this song 2 much myself but Chris is my fav so i'm not gunna trash him 4 1 bad song.U the man chris
Posted by the penguin @ 11/07/2001 10:23 PM EST

I don't care what others say, this song has a great feel to it. Chris' vocals have a wild '70s almost punkish sound. The combination of guitar notes that roll around and the crunching power chords kicks buttock. I like the crazy scream at the end. It sounds like Roger Waters on 'The Wall'.
Posted by Peter Skov @ 11/03/2001 12:52 AM EST

I don't get why everyone seems to dislike this song so much!?! There's at least a ton of raw "power/energy" going into that one.. the guitars are amazing..
I was overall rather disappointed with Chris's songs from BTB but he really got his act together for Pretty Together.. and this one is, in my opinion, a real rocker.. don't understand why it doesn't make people want to jump around or something..
Posted by Patricia @ 10/31/2001 05:41 PM EST

this is the worst sloan song I have ever heard, is this a song to fill the album or the ego in chris murphy's head? well, whatever it is it sucks!!!though the rest of the album is great, especially "it's in your eyes" hey instead of pick it up, why not Pretty together? That would have been a much better choice
Sincerely,
Jay

This song is astuounding. The amazing riffs used by Sloan in this song capture the feel of the 80's Rock and Roll scene, bringing me back to the days of Kiss and AC/DC, and should become an instant Sloan Classic. This is my second favorite song on the album and I rate it at 4 .

Posted by Jason The BIGGEST SLOAN FAN EVER!! @ 10/29/2001 03:02 PM EST

I must say that this song has some serious rock power. It's like She Says What She Means times ten. The lyrics are hoaky and excellent. Good work, Chris. This is my favourite album by Sloan since OCTA, by far. They're much more at home with this shoegazer meets 70's soft rock than their last two "greatest hits"-sounding albums.
Posted by Ian @ 10/29/2001 12:14 PM EST

LOL... Jason, I couldn't agree more. I don't usually post on messageboards either, least of all criticize on them. But I can't help myself on this one. I've had talks with several Sloan fans and... yeah. It was unanimous. "Ick" is the only word that I could mutter after hearing this. "Ick", and "Paul Stanley."
Posted by Erin @ 10/27/2001 11:04 PM EST

Whoa... it just goes to show you. I would've figured that EVERYONE would be trashing this song, but I guess it's all a matter of taste.

For all the songs I like, I might rank Pretty Together ABOVE Between the Bridges, but THIS song however is ABYSMAL. In my opinion, it's not only the worst song Sloan has ever committed to tape, it's the worst song ever in the history of rock and roll. O.K.... so perhaps that's pushing it, but C'MON! It makes me want to cry. The traumatic experience of listening to it damn near erases every beautiful Sloan memory from my brain. I can't even comprehend the band listening to the playback and not laughing their collective heads off. I mean... if it was a complete spur-of-the-moment improvisation, it might even be forgivable.

Might.

My brother, a HUGE fan, uttered the stunned question "Is this really happening?" as we listened to it... for the third time. I still can't believe it.

Now don't get mad at me. I usually don't hang around message boards, but I'm avoiding a paper I have to write.... School ain't fun no more. God bless Sloan fans everywhere. This song sucks!

Posted by Jason @ 10/24/2001 02:29 AM EST

Sorry, but this song is embarassing. How can they even consider putting it on the cd. Hey I love Sloan but this should have stayed of the cd.
Posted by Domenic P. @ 10/23/2001 10:24 PM EST

This sounds like a rejected track from Kim Mitchel's 1989 Rockland album.
Posted by Martin @ 10/22/2001 11:06 PM EST

this tune, really reminds me of KISS. just the style, especially the drumming, it reminds me of Peter Criss.
maybe it's just me.

The Good in Everyone was Sloan's best rock tune ever. This is not Sloan's best rock tune ever.

chris redeams his horrible "The Other Man" with this smashing rocker. well done!
Posted by will @ 10/13/2001 01:42 PM EST

Please don't stop loving Sloan over this album their putting out soon. Like I said earliar, rock N' Roll ain't all about the crashing of the drums etc.. It's about the hard work they putted into.. Don't allways go by the music displayed, listen to the lyrics of the song. The lyrics is the main part of music. Andrew, music ain't all about the loudness of the the electric bass or the roaring elec guitar, It's all about the passion or the work they putted into.. Not the sound of the beat.. it's the lyrics, it's the voices of the vocal(s)!.. the love they showed..

this song is one of the only tunes on the new album that can be even considered rock and roll. are they getting to old to play rock? because i definetly see a more girly style. this is still a good album by todays stnders, but it is the worst one slone hase ever created. follow the old ways and come up with a new album very soon or you have lost a long time fan.
Posted by Andrew Paskieivch @ 10/07/2001 09:27 PM EST

Sounds like Dylan on acid. Uncertain about this one but growing on me.

OH I'M KIDDING!

Posted by Kari D. @ 09/23/2001 02:09 AM EST

Your right there Shawn. Thier albums don't let the rock'N Roll scene down over the hill. Rock is a part of history over the past years and the incoming new years now. And,Sloan will allways be remembered as an highly recommened band to look over to. Their albums will be remembered by fans like you and myself, and as we all grow up, I give a 100% change they will be well known thoughout Canada music history. When I look back, I will be pretty proud of what they accomplised in. And shall let it be, and only let Sloan be our idol in Music. O lord.. *laughs, I am rambling off here, bye.

Love this song! I just can't get enough of it. Reminds me a little of Zen Guerrilla, which is a great thing! Probably my favourite song on the album, and no rock n' roll is not dead!
