6. The Great Wall
Chinese philosophy you can shake a tambourine to.

ANDREW: "I’m really just trying to write a good cohesive tune, something that I’d want to listen to. I’m certainly not thinking of writing singles or the anti-single. It’s really just about playing pieces of a puzzle and hoping it comes together. Maybe there’s lots of twists and loops and stuff, but I like that — that’s the kind of music I’m drawn to. I’m kinda bad because I end up just waiting to cram for the exam the night before, so I won’t write any lyrics until two days before I have to go and sing them — but sometimes that’s when you get the best stuff."

1st off I would like to state that this is a beautiful album, I was very suprised at how the guys have matured as a band and as writers. This song to me is incredibly sincere and honest, its like a coming out of denial thing(my intepretation) its like the gravity of some situation coming to full and complete realization. With the rest of the world going on and you realizing it. Its kinda sad. But I love it

And guys please come to seattle. You have fans here for life.

This is definetly one of my favorite songs on the album.
I would like to say that I like Andrew's songs the best but then I'll listen to some other stuff and I realize that all of you are great song writers.
So, keep up the great work and pleeeease come back to Halifax sometime in the future because there are plenty of huge Sloan fans here who want to see another concert.
Thanks, Evan

Mr Travis, I believe Sinking Ship and In the Movies are both Andrew songs. I have the Japanese releases which come with a write-up about the band and the songs. I can't read everything but Andrew is credited with those two. After some time you may become familiar enough with the voices of each member. Once you can name the singer(s) of each song by ear only you will find that you too have become sloaned!

This song is the best song yet!!!! Sloan knows how to keep people listening to their music.

Does anyone know how to find out who writes various different Sloan songs? I'm very curious about "Sinking ship", "In the Movies" and others. Thanks!

the verse bit doesn't really go for gold, but the rest of it really pulls through, which all adds up to part two of "Why Andrew Scott kicks your ass."

Andrew does it again... what can i say... amazing.
Posted by rachel @ 01/03/2002 04:37 PM EST

Easily the best song on the album.

I LOVE this song!! The whole album's great, but this song is outta this world! Hearing it live in TO was the best! Andrew rocks!!

Nice guitar peddle work, this song is great because you can hear the guitar riffs almost like in Revolver. It sounds like Lennon's Sleeping song.

best song on the record, hands down. the verse has a nice cake feel. while the other's are on the back side of their songwriting careers, andrew is in top form. hahzah for andrew scott, best songwriter in the band

I feel Andrew Scott is probably the most underrated songwriter of the group. The catchy riffs and somewhat deep lyrics make this a classic tune!

I like it, and I love the line, 'Never worried about the time or my dwindling cash flow'.

I heard this track live yesterday in toronto- i must say it is nice to find out who plays what on the songs as the CD cover doesn't say- hearing it live gave it more life than when i listened to it on the CD for the first time

The chorus is excellent and it's what really stood out to me when I heard the song for the first time. And Andrew's voice sounds wicked as well....it sounds like Andrew is just finally coming into his own and really using his voice in all it's glory. Great job, classic tune.

I luv this tune, Andrew sounds amazing! He's so awsome!

I picked up the cd this morning (I'm such a keener), and this track is awesome. I've felt for a long time now that Andrew's writing is really quite amazing.

"I can't believe your plane is flying, it seems so heavy."

ya, it is me again. another soft no rock, crap song. i am just getting pissed of! stay with the 90's style if ant aint fuck'n broke dont fix it!

Nice use of space. Uncluttered and flowing.

this song is ok

As I listened to the thirty-second long clips, this one jumped out at me the most as a song I know I'll enjoy once the album comes out. Thanks, as always, for your amazing muscial contributions to the world.
Posted by Homes @ 10/03/2001 10:52 AM EST

Sounds like the brooding song, par excellence. I'm getting excited over this the more I check the samples! 30 seconds of this song is too little to grasp the full thing, but Andrew's songwriting is definitely still growing by leaps and bounds.

Andrew..My brother got me a t-shirt from the great wall it's the coolest fucking t-shit, too!...He got me two in fact...When you guys come to Chicago I'm going to wear it in your honor..And I will gladly give you the other one..When I see you either before or after the show..
Posted by john @ 09/30/2001 10:39 PM EST

I adore this band and everyone's contributions - each makes up the whole that I've loved for years. Although, it's been a couple days since I first listened to these soundbites and this is the song that is still stuck in my head. It always seems that Andrew's songs are the ones that float in one ear and never quite permanently go out the other. They're the ones that I can appreciate on a different level everytime I hear them. Excellant. Can't wait.
