7. The Life of a Working Girl
A post-millennial gender-twist on John Lennon’s "Working Class Hero" or just a simple, sad-eyed tune about a guy who misses his girl? You decide.

CHRIS: "This album is kind of like SMEARED, in that we could attach specific people to every song. Everyone’s had sort of a sad year."

PATRICK: "Chris will sometimes do a song stripped-down like this live — essentially so the rest of us can go get a beer — but this was one case where he demoed the song as is. This is also one where you can really hear Brenndan McGuire’s contributions, with all these textured noises and reverb on it."

That's so touching. :)

And you're a lucky girl to see Sloan and concert and I'm so proud for you. :)))

Whenever I get any chance to see Sloan in concert, that memory would be kept inside my heart forever. Filled with passion and happiness.

Oh Sloan;
What can I say you never fail to amaze me. Your lyrics, your melodies and your overall talent rocks my world. I've seen you 6 times now and every time is better than the last. This song especially moved me, I swear there was a tear in my eye the first time I heard it. When I heard it live though I thought I was going to explode!!! I've been a fan since I was 12 and the first time I saw you live was on my 13th birthday. since then you've truly captured my heart and I'm sure the hearts of many others. When you guys "broke up" to get out of that shitty record deal I felt sick to my stomach. I can listen to your music day or night, sad or happy. Sadly though I missed the waterloo show you recently played. Believe me I was crushed. Well I better stop now I think I'm sounding a bit obsessive. Just keep doing what your doing and you'll always have a place in my heart!!!!!!!

You know how sometimes a song just seems to describe your life down to the tiniest detail. I've been dating or at least trying to date this woman who is so focused on getting her career going that she makes no time for herself.

I freaked out when I heard this song. IT IS SOOOO ABOUT HER!

Thanks Chris

Man, what a great tune. It reminds me of another beautiful song by The Band called It Makes No Difference. Quite possibly the two most equisite songs ever written. Them Canadians can write some damn fine tunes.

Very true Christine. To know a real good experience of a song you have to be there at da live concert. But for me, I never went to a concert live yet. Hopefully I will but, theres allways a chance I won't. But then again my faith will stick to the postive side of it. Theres allways a time, right?
Anything can come true if you believe in it strong enough. My Lord will help me with my wish :)

When I first heard this song on the CD I thought it was very beautifully written but it seemed a little out of place compared to the other songs on the album. When I heard Chris + Andrew perform it live at the Kool Haus I just about fainted since I couldn't believe just how amazing Chris could sing. I think this song is one that you have to experience live to really get into it.

Great song, very poignant - I think Chris is really a great observer of life and it shows in the well-crafted lyrics.

The acoustic arrangement is terrific. One of the best tracks on Pretty Together!

i cannot fathom what all these people are talking about. this is a 100% guaranteed skip tune. it sounds like a cast-off from "strangeways here we come," as sung by chris murphy with a sinus condition. there is a line between literately clever and ludicrously smartassed; these lyrics passed that line ages ago and have not been seen since. please stop this madness.

I love that song it one of my favorites, among the rest of the album. It has a nice tune and chris has a really good voice, not just a bunch of screaming.

"The Life of a Working Girl" may be my favorite song on the album. Love the sparseness of the musical arrangement, Chris' vocals, and above all, the lyrics. Reminds me of the Smiths at their melancholy best -- songs like "This Night Has Opened My Eyes", "Half a Person" or "Back to the Old House". Translation for those unfamiliar with the Smiths: "Life of a Working Girl" is on its way to becoming a classic. ;-) Personally, Chris has never let me down with his songwriting skills, but I like to see him taking things in a new, more "mature" direction -- making himself a little more vulnerable... It shows courage, and demonstrates his continuing growth as a songwriter -- well done, Murphy!
Posted by Isabela @ 11/18/2001 08:03 PM EST

Pretty music, but the lyrics are SO whiney!! Jeez, girls need to make a living too!
Posted by Kathryn @ 11/05/2001 03:30 PM EST

Chris' writing shines on this track. His unusual rhyming scemes and choices of words to rhyme are awesome, for lack of a better word. The guitar, though repetative, is so beautiful that a musically more complex song would only compete with the delightfully melancholy story. A Japanese record reviewer likened this tune to Paul McCartney.

AAAAAHHHH, the first song on the Cd that made me think I was actually listening to Sloan. This is by far my favorite. I love when Chris rhymes. It is so cheesy and pop-y, but I can't help but love it.
Posted by Sizzleteen @ 10/31/2001 03:32 PM EST

Chris Murphy is back. He was slipping lyrically for a while, but rhyming "teenager" with "early thirties I would wager," "I came along a little later" and "carbon date her" is classic.
Posted by ian @ 10/29/2001 12:18 PM EST

A gorgeous song. Chris' vocals are hauntingly beautiful. The guitar is really great....still trying to learn how to play it. :) Chris just keeps getting better and better...gotta love him!
Posted by Sheila @ 10/23/2001 11:30 PM EST

oh man, i love this song...i dont even know what to say about it, chris songs are my favourite especially for the sad slow ones, and i thought that twice removed had some damn fine ones, but this song, i havent even heard the whole cd yet cuz i cant get off of this track.
Posted by ash @ 10/20/2001 08:20 PM EST

the first time I heard this song, i was in disbeilive that i was listening to sloan, i thought my cd player switched to Lennon, but when I sat again and listened to the words, I almost cried. THis song captures the real emotion of being torn away from the one you love, yet understanding why at the same time. I also see a great amount of growth in Chris' vocals on this song. Very Melodic and very emotional. If ever were a sone EMO this would be it.

this song is definitley a keeper. It's mellow, it's beautiful, it's soooo chris.

I loved this song hearing it live, it was even better then... and it is good on the album too, very mellow, makes me sleepy... so very sleepy....
Posted by Evan @ 10/18/2001 01:32 PM EST

This song really surprised me when i listened to it the first time. We didn't get this kind of sweet emotional masterpiece since "junior panthers", and i absolutely LOVE the guitar playing, so warm and pretty. Sloan have come up with a very mature album, very different but excellent.
Posted by Tom Sawyer @ 10/18/2001 09:51 AM EST

I love this song done with chris's raspy voice it sounds good. the earlyer sugestion that patrick might have done a better job i dont agree with. patrick has a great smooth voice and this song sounds good raspy. If patrick were to put vocals in i would only have it as backup in the chorus.
Posted by Kevin Ogilvie @ 10/17/2001 04:17 PM EST

One of my favorites on the album! Billy - I'm working on figuring out the guitar part too... I'll let you know what I come up with.
Posted by Slacker @ 10/17/2001 02:30 PM EST

This is an incredible tune - I think I played it 10 times straight today while driving home after purchasing the cd.
Posted by Jon L. @ 10/16/2001 11:59 PM EST

I like the song, but even though Chris wrote it, I think it would have sounded better if Patrick did the vocals. It's a sparse, melodic song and I think Patrick's voice has a gentler quality to it. Still love the song though.

I absolutely love this song. It's achingly beautiful. I've been trying to learn the guitar part and it's really hard to get that melody down. Anybody learn it yet? I think it may be capoed, I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Getting pretty down about staying in bed. Anyways, Shawn can you tell me where I can download their mp3's before I can get a couple copies or more of their album?. I would like to hear the whole songs. If you could help, it be very appreciated.Thank-you very much.
