9. It's in Your Eyes
Brings together the two most important things in life: sweet love and a steady backbeat.
PATRICK: "It’s got a very Jesus and Mary Chain-type
beat. There’s this repeating section at the end and
that was done by mistake. I recorded it on Logic software,
and it lets you repeat a little section if you want
— if you take a line of a song as being six chords,
Logic was only playing the first three over and over
again, and that sounded kind of cool, and we cut that
out and put it at the end. This is a good example of
a song that wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t doing
it on computer. The version I had at home was six and
a half minutes long. Initially it was supposed to be
very New Order."

| Best song on the album - but absolutely the most fantastic song live at the Cool Haus show in Toronto last October. It had such great energy and the guitars played wonderfully off each other. Even my friends who had never even heard the recorded version were stunned by it. The song is well written - and damn hard to figure out how to play on guitar. I love you guys live...Oasis should be opening for you at the ACC! |

| Such beautiful harmonies Chris and Patrick...R=This is such a beautiful song, and I could listen to it a zillion times, and not be tired of it...Cause, you're so crazy...crazy..

| Well, I can see why us girls love this song. (Nope, it isn't *only* because Patrick wrote it... ;))
It is something simple, pulled from our being. I think everyone can relate to it, but being women we find that vulnerability rarely in others, especially guys - when we see it, we swoon and marvel.
It got my attention because of that point...it is as if in the beginnning of the song, the narrator is confident ('yeah, I know just why'), almost cocky in a sense, taking his relationship for granted. Upon closer examination - it shows his insecurities ('I believe about anything you say is true') and how he has come to rely on her for self assurance and devotion ('It's in your eyes all the time'). In the end, he wonders how this person could end up caring and loving him, as if his cockiness has melted away in the cast of doubt, almost if he'd ever even be good enough for this person ('And I don't know why'). He does find seem to take comfort in the fact that he does know, deep inside (again 'It's in your eyes, all the time, it's not hard to find') why.
Anyhow, that is my take on it - I hope it makes sense and isn't too far off the path.
It is funny how the human experience is so fundamental in a way. I know I've thought this about my fiance many times and thought, how could this truly wonderful person be with ME? I thought I knew why, but when I have a doubt, all I have to do is just look in his eyes - it is there that lies all the answers I'll ever need.
Way to go Patrick, great song.

| well i'm glad to see that i'm not the only one who puts this wonderous song on repeat. My repeat button is my favorite button whenever i have pretty together in my stereo. I listen to this song all the time!! Patrick keep up the good work! I would say something technical about this song but i don't know any technical music mumbo jumbo. But have you noticed that it is mostly girls who fell in love with this song (including me)? Patrick you can totally score with any girl in the whole world if you keep this up;) |
| It is, hands down, the best song on the album and it is my favorite Sloan song.
This song yanks at your heartstrings, lifts you up, and gets you to that warm, fuzzy, & confusing place inside ones relationships. It is awesome and I can't stop listening to it.
P.S. I can hear the New Order influence - it was pointed out to me even before seeing this page, by my die-hard New Order fan fiance :)

| call that a guitar solo? call that a bridge? starts off good but careers out of control at an alarming pace. catchy while it's on, but forgotten when it's gone. |
| Can't stop listening to it...i love it i love it i love it! |
| After repeated listens, I can totally hear an early New Order influence. Still not hearing the Jesus & Mary Chain beat ... should stop obsessing about it. :) It's not that I'm out to play the "sounds like this or that" game with Sloan songs, but when the guys bring it up first, I just like to see if I can hear the influences they had in mind when they were working on the song... Plus, it would be pretty nifty :) if Sloan did do a fuzzed-out J & MC-type song - am I the only one who still thinks that Smeared was totally brilliant? |
| This song reminds me of my girlfriend who I met for the first time at the Waterloo show : ) |
| Definitely a catchy tune, but I have to say I'm not hearing the Jesus & Mary Chain sound that Pat talks about... In order to sound like J&MC, the guitars would have to be fuzzed out & waaaaayyy slower & Patrick's vocals would have to sound like he'd just downed a bottle of Valium with a bottle of vodka (and don't forget the screechy feedback!). ;-)
I'm sure all the cool musical influences the guys refer to are more obvious in the early stages of recording the songs, and then become more subtle as the songs evolve. That's not a criticism though! Better to integrate your influences into your work than to wear them on your sleeve. Sloan are good at drawing inspiration from disparate sources & using them to make an end product that's recognizably "Sloan." |
| this is the best one on the album...i feel no shame in saying that i listened to it on repeat for an hour the first time i heard it...you should release this one next boys! |
| I love it! I think it's my favorite on this album. ("Ground for the sky" is a VERY close second.) |
Ive had this song on repeat for 3 days now. Quite simply the BEST song thats come out in a long time. Thumbs up Patrick, you ROCK.

| I've heard so much music in the last 18 years I'm not such who this sounds like, but it, like the other songs, is absolutely a splendid piece of work. It's a bit of rock that everyone can enjoy. |
| Reminds me of Built To Spill's "Else." For those of you who aren't in the know, this is an ecstatically positive criticism. Patrick returns on side 2 in full force. |
| the rhythm is unbelievable |
| It's a good song, one of the best songs on the album. Patrick's usually got cool and catchy tunes and this one's no different. good stuff |
| If this song were to speak to me anymore than it does, I'd have to get myself committed. |
hey, this message is for, kevin ogilive who posted there fave patrick songs from other albums... I think there's a mistake. what's there to decide is by Jay, isn't it??? and Suppose They Close The Door, that's by chris??? I might be mitaken, but I'm pretty damn sure. take it easy, sarah/ash |
| This song is VERY twice removed. I'm digging it. |
this song is one of my fave's!!! it's reminds me of Navy Blues days. but better. it's so good! I luv the drum pattern, and the guitar riff between the verse and chorus'. take it easy, sarah/ash Toronto, Canada |
I personaly live for these patrick toons on each album this is another great song to the patrick collection: smeared-whats there to decide twice removed-loosens one chord-cant face up navy blues-in not threw with you yet between the bridges-A long time coming and now this great track :) |
| It isn't very original for me to just swoon and gurgle like an infant whenever I listen to this jewel of a song, is it? O, well. |
| The moog in the chorus is inspired. i like the "new" more electronic type sound. as always, you maintain the cool sloan type groove while experimenting with your sound. Bravo. |
| really, really kewl song. cannot stop listening to it. this is one of those songs that seem to have a "feel" to it. |
| Same harmonies as "Never Seeing the Ground..." but they work better here. Hypnotic. |
| i like this song, 1 of the better ones on the album |
| best track on the album hands down. as usual, patrick is responsible for the the highlights on the CD. |
| ditto. it's so soothing. and even though "soothing" is a marketing word, it really is. a big pillow of joy. i tells you. |
| My favourite song... *swoon* |
| it's very lovely. i can't stop listening to it. |
