11. I Love a Long Goodbye
All things must pass.

CHRIS: "This used to be a demo called "Harrisong," because I thought it sounded like a George Harrison song.

JAY: "I definitely wanted this song to sound like something off ALL THINGS MUST PASS."

On of the most charming songs I've ever heard. The harmonies are beautiful!

Yeah, this one definitely stands out. Those chord changes MUST get to you, one way or the other. It's a mighty clever trick, Chris. :)

I've heard similar tunes in the past but this one's really awesome. I love the words, the chords, the voice(s) - especially in the break-part when Pat, Jay and Andrew do the ahhhh's while Chris sings the lead.

Even though Ryan mentioned that the tune reminds him of the Beach Boys, I beg to differ. I can't exactly say under whose influence this one was penned, but, to me, it isn't exactly the BB. It might as well be George H.

The closest Sloan have ever got to the Beach Boys (vocally) must be (and this is just my opinion) "Junior Panthers" and "Don't You Believe a Word" - both being Jay's babies.

And let me tell you, the harmonies in D.Y.B.A.W. are one of the best I have EVER heard (and that includes the Beatles and the BB/Brian Wilson!).

Pay attention to the SOUND of the bass guitar and Chris' playing(soooooo McCartney circa Rubber Soul/Revolver)!), the Strawberry Fields 'Hammond' sound in the intro (and its evolution throughout the tune), Andrew's kick-ass drumming (sort of reminds me of 'Tomorrow Never Knows')...

Cheers

ok sloan, you ROCK my world. i saw you in calgary last time you were here. you inspire me to keep practising my guitar. in fact, i'm learning this song. keep up the stellar work!

This song cracks me up because it's so beautiful, but if a guy actually talked like that I think you'd call him a stalker.

wow. a bit of a pocket symphony with a refreshing dearth of smartassed lyrics. thank god i'm not breaking up with anyone or it'd have me in tears every time.

Beautiful song, love Chris' vocals - makes the screeching in "Pick It Up & Dial It" nothing but a distant memory... ;-) The only thing better than a Chris or a Jay song is a collaborative Chris & Jay song - more, I say! More!

Chris & Jay totally own this album. More Chris & Jay! MORE, I say!!! :)

This is my favorite song in all of the cd, I don't know why but I just love it because it builds up, and yes, I do love George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album. And I have to agree with Chris, it does sound like it sort of like My Sweet Love, but with a stronger build up.
Chicago chick.

This is the point in the album where you finally realise how much stronger each song is getting, that we may be reaching a climax, and you don't want it to end.
Superior track--transcendental in every possible way...*(that's supposed to be five stars).

this is chris's strongest song on the album. i always give him shit about ripping off the beatles, but despite the reviews, this number is all chris.

When I first heard this song I thought, "Wow, this is the Beach Boys." I hadn't noticed the similarity to All Things Must Pass, but I do now. Chris-You were blessed with a rock voice that is similar to George's, and John Lennon's for that matter(YOU LUCKY BASTARD). And I don't like comparing anybody to the Beatles, or the Beach Boys for that matter, but if any current group is worthy it's Sloan. Sloan is one of the best and most original rock groups OF ALL TIME!!! and if you recognize my email address, you know that I'm aware of good rock!!!the club is open
SLOAN-COME TO FARGO!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, George Harrison and parts of it sound like a track off Pink Floyd's Division Bell, particularly the opening notes of the guitar solo. I totally dig the the attempt to be positive about a breakup that you agreed to but didn't really want. 'I need to know you love me,' allows the true feelings behind the mock cheer to surface. This album is a new step for the band in that there is so much sentiment, and more heart. They are maturing in the best sense that a band can mature: by exploring new areas without giving up what made them popular.

Love it. Absolutely amazing track. Well done...

I agree this is the best song on the album. It sounds a little like George Harrison's "When You Believe," but it's a much finer song. I like the way it ends after the second soaring chorus just when it's all been said, and doesn't fade out like a lot of songs do. (though i can't think of any Sloan songs right now that do fade out)

this is chris' best work in a while. fantastic job.

Another great song...I really like the lyrics and transition in the sound. It starts slowly, and by the end, there is a definite urgency in the music and lyrics-well done. Another one I can relate to. I love this new album!! Cheers...Pete
P.S.-Andrew, you're right...there is a definite George Harrison flavor here

chris' songs are a lot more mature on this record, not a lot of pun's or jokes and or fooling around, which is always good. he's got a serious side too. a whole lotta chris is always a good thing!

Further to my comment of 15 October, I saw Sloan at Barrymore's in Ottawa. The first time I had been in the venue and it had a real intimate feel to it.....
The concert was fantastic, as they always are. A few sound problems, but the new songs went over well. I'm glad most of the crowd around me got into the new stuff, because it is sound value for money and undoubtly one of the highlights of my C.D. buying year. (My opinion!)I spent time listening to Pretty Together today and after 3 spins, it's in there! Deep, sad and thoughtful.
Don't stop guys...............

I adore it, it just tears my heart out. (And I don't mind? Go figure.)
I love that little homage to VU's "Who Loves The Sun" in there, too.
Sigh...

This song jumped out at me while listening to the new disc. The lyrics are heartwrenching and anyone with a broken heart can identify with Chris' sincerity. I love this albumn!!

When this song first started playing, I was thinking, "shit, what the hell is this?"

But it is definitely an awesome song. A very good example of how you guys are great at harmonizing.

Im starting 2 really like this song.I made most of my commends after only hearing the songs once.I starting 2 think this is a good album, but not better then "Twice Removed"

Here I am a thirty-something Scottish/but living in Canada teacher, sat here trying to do some school work at 10.30pm and I have been totally sidetracked by this web site. Hey, it's my favourite band, so I can be forgiven!
It's 16th October tomorrow and I have to get the new album, before going to see 'The Guys' in Ottawa tomorrow night and I am wired-up and can't wait.........If you guys are ever passing through Arnprior, give a shout, there's always N.S. beer in the fridge!

Phenomenal. Wow. I love the vocal line and the drumming/bass combo.

jeremy, u think it sounds like One Cord To Another?i dont.

this song does sound like a harrison song tho, which is my favorite beetle

Posted by the penguin @ 10/06/2001 12:31 AM EST

i have heard the whole album and to be honest i was not the biggest sloan fan before hearing this album .But this album is one of the best albums i've heard this year along with jimmy eats world bleed american .Pretty together reminds me somewhat of one chord to another but with a more mature feel . The song "i love long goodbyes" one of my favorites bleeds beatles influence. And the "who u talking too" has a sort of late seventies early eighties feel to it. it's refreshing to hear an album that has such diverity and yet each song complements each other well. I look forward to checking them out the next time their in Halifax

Hwy lads, nothing wrong with trying to make it sound "George-ish", I havent yet had the pleasure of hearing this song, but if anyone(Sloan members included) want to call me and sing it to me over the phone or on my voice-mail please feel free to do so..(847)546-3010 Thanks...CAN'T WAIT to hear this album!!

I think you guys definitely succeeded. From the glimpse you've given us of your new record, this may just be the song I'm most eager to hear when I get my own copy. But don't worry, I won't skip ahead. I was really curious to see where Sloan would be going after the development in Between The Bridges, with regards to more layering and structural and harmonic complexity, and this is the sort of thing I imagined might happen. Cheers!
