12. Are You Giving Me Back My Love?
Hope you’ve got extra tissue.

JAY: "I wanted to make this sound like "To Here Knows When" by My Bloody Valentine, make it very dense but soft… but I didn’t know how to do it. After a while I just started making it more and more sparse, with bass and guitar and then just this string part that goes through it. And then it turned into Simon & Garfunkel. Some of the music in that is an old song we played even before Sloan that Chris had lying around, it used to be really heavy but we sort of slowed it down and played on acoustic guitar."

PATRICK: "It’s the saddest song I’ve ever heard."

Hi Evan, I'm 17 and nice to meet you. :)))

Your right there Evan. Sloan do
deserve alot more then what they are recievin'. Bands like Nickleback and Creed and all those bands get alot of reward for things they didn't even do. Like not writin' even half of da songs they sing.

Why should they get credit for doin' nothin' ?- They probably pay professional writers to make the songs for them. They got so much money to do that.
Another, they can't sing. It all sounds the same.

Now a singer like Jay for instance is what I call a singer. His voice is different, unique, a very sweet tone to it.

A band like Sloan is what I call awesome music.. I mean awesome!!!

I agree as well, accept I'm only 16, and it's music like that I only listen to. All of my buddies are either into punk or rap, which for the most part has no value at all and is sooooo repetetive and boring. It's a song like this that you can actually feel, and I can't say enough good things about it. And Sloan is one of the few groups I listen to which actually have some variation between each of the tunes. Every song is different, most likely because all 4 of them write the stuff. I love all of the music, and this is just another example of what a great band Sloan is, and they definetly do not get the recognition which they deserve.
Thanks, Evan

I believe those who dislike this song are missing a life experience to make it familiar.

This is the *ultimate* rejection. Inredibly poignant, simple and painful. It reminds me of Ben Folds' Reinhold Messner CD.

Not being a single, this song is the sort of gem that kids will discover in 30 years and wonder why they've never heard more music like it. Congratulations, Jay.

Okay, I can't reply in the "Your Dreams Have Come True" track. Anyways the nickname "herb" replied that the song is gay. Well.. let me tell you a little somethin'. Your reply is very true, you know why?- when you said it is gay, gay means happy and, that song is a happy tune. But, if you mean the other meanin'.. well.. your wrong !
Sloan are talented young men!~ blah~!
And I don't see why a Sloan fan like yourself, as I think you are, would actually say such a thing.
Every album rockz, no doubt about it.
If you think music is all about bashin' drums and electical guitars goin' wild, well.. I dunno. I think music is all in the person's voice. Sure, the background is great to set in with the person's voice but, if you have music loud enough to drown that person, it really doesn't sound good, just a bunch of bangin'.
The voices of Sloan and the music made by them is beautifuly put together. All that takes alot of hard work. It's never too easy to write somethin' to what you want it to turn out to. It takes long term practice. Just like Sloan did, took their time to get what they putted on their album. I give them tons of credit for it too.
They are my true heroes.
I love you guys!!!!
Never give up your awesome music!
*smooooooooooches to 4 of you* :))))*

Why would anyone think of bodies hitting the floor when they think about this song?

Say, can we mosh to this? Ballroom moshing? Could be an Olympic event...

Right on! But, Sloan are allready gettin' it on! wazzzzzzzz sup!? heheh

What else is there to say? Sloan f#ckin rocks! Just because they aren't screaming,"Let the bodies hit the floor", or some other revamped bridging-the-gap (between rock & rap) bullshit, doesn't mean you can't harmonize when you rock. Get it on Sloan...

Sweeeeeeeeet, and cute. You won't look like a moron by accidently.

Glad ya asked sweetie.
Hello Kitty, "makes the biscuit" is just a sayin' I hear people say alot of times at home and when I shoppin', and even in school. I wouldn't really call it a Nova Scotian expression, eventhough I am one :) but, anyone can say it if ya hear it enough. It simply means, it's really, really good, just like a biscuit is. I suppose this is a old sayin' 'cause I think biscuits were, as I want to say "Popular" in those days.
So I guess they putted that together and it became a sayin' for all of us.<-- I know, I am not makin sense here, *laughs
Anyways, I bet you can name alot of sayin's ya here along your days.
hmm.. theres so many, I forget half of them.. *smiles*. La8 :)

Is "makes the biscuit" a Nova Scotian expression? Just curious...
Posted by hello kitty @ 02/11/2002 01:37 AM EST

Aww... Christine.
To me this song is da best! I love slow tunes, especially Jay's and I love those rockin' ones where you just gotta jump around!
It really reminds me what happens in a everyday life. This song can really relate to da ones Sean Lennon makes. Nice and slow. Havin' a catchin' sound to it,and the voice really makes the biscuit! Like da song "queue" from Sean Lennon and "Space Ship", Two Fine Lovers". Anways, I just love this song :))) It really can make you feel warm inside..

This song really doesn't do much for me, it starts off well but gets really boring as it goes along. It sounds a little too early 80's-ish to me. Its not that horrible though, hearing it doesn't make me want to run screaming from the room or anything like that.

eric carmen meets the bee gees. could use a bit more harmonic variety in the verse, but it's still above par for ferguson inc.
Posted by slowworm @ 01/10/2002 08:01 AM EST

there's a reason for the johnny and noelle thing at the end. they are actually two people that Jay knows who are/were a couple and were having serious problems in their relationship. At least that's what I've heard...i may be wrong.
Posted by Sheila @ 12/12/2001 11:21 PM EST

Jay is clearly the genius of Sloan. He's not worried about being "ballsy," he's just worried about creating the greatest songs ever. "Lemon Zinger" is certainly one of them, and he's almost back at that level for this album.
Posted by ian @ 12/10/2001 07:30 PM EST

I have to admit, I love everything about this song *except* the "Johnny & Noelle" line at the very end. Seems unnecessary, like it was just tacked on at the end for some inexplicable reason. I think the song would've been stronger without that bit...
Posted by hello kitty @ 12/04/2001 01:55 PM EST

Johnny and Noelle? I think Johhny is the 'dirtbag' in that Weatus song. Didn't he like that tube sock/keds sporting girl named Noelle?
Sorry, that was kind of a sick joke.

Every time this # comes on my friend says, "Its the Air Supply song!" I don't think he's poking fun. I take it as a complement. Jay is a master of melody. I love everything that any of the four of them do.
Posted by Larry @ 12/02/2001 05:36 PM EST

This song is great, it has that Air Supply feel to it. It doesn't sound a thing like Simon and Garfunkel.

#sniff#, I just realized that Pop Tart.. somone could've broke Jay's heart into pieces!!! ):.

I can't.. believe it can happen.. excuse me.. I can't take it..

Posted by PoP^PuPPy17 @ 11/26/2001 07:37 PM EST

Less is more. Such a sweet, straight-forward song -- heart-wrenching without having to resort to overwrought emotional "pyrotechnics". That's the mark of a strong songwriter (oh, and I'd say the same about "Life of a Working Girl").

What I want to know is, who would be stupid enough to break little Jay's heart? ;-) (Assuming that these songs are in any way autobiographical)

Posted by pop tart @ 11/26/2001 03:36 PM EST

Jay Ferguson is a superstar in stereo.

jay's writing has evolved and has arrived. job well done. this track brings a girl to her knees.
Posted by jenny s. @ 11/17/2001 12:17 AM EST

Who are Johnny and Noelle? A Google search only turned up a Johnny and Noelle on the Christian Cowboy Ministry Listing from Montana. Somehow I doubt this is who Jay has in mind. Anwers and thoughts are welcome.
Posted by Kirby Miller @ 11/16/2001 11:34 AM EST

This song seems to provoke a lot of hostility out of some Sloan fans ,judging by their propensity to damn the tune as tripe their "parents listen to" (this attitude is inevitable when most of your fanbase are in their teens/early 20's). But this fact shouldn't discourage Jay (and Sloan as a whole) from musically straying from their basic framework. These guys are no longer children (I'm assuming they're all in their early 30's) and they shouldn't have to pander to juvenile mentality and musical stagnancy for the sake of a bunch bozos who don't like the "wimpy s**t". "Are You Giving Me Back My Love?" is a poignant ,touching tune that anyone who grew up with 70's AM radio softrock will appreciate. Don't let the bastards grind ya down, Jay.
Posted by Glenn S @ 11/11/2001 09:41 PM EST

The more I listen to it, the more I can't believe how well-crafted this song is, how perfect it is in every way.
"You play the song, the one that hits your heart from the start... The melody so sweet you want to die, violently.... The perfect words sung by the perfect voice in the world to me. I'm on your side- those were the sweetest words you spoke to me."

It's like Jay predicted this one.

Posted by Aquarius @ 11/11/2001 04:36 AM EST

This song is so haunting and pretty; it reminds me of George Harrison's tone in 'Beware of Darkness'...even (really) early Bee Gees...Jay is SO cool!

Simple? Repetative? Well mixed but not my cup of tea? I'd rather agree with the person who said this is the saddest song she'd ever heard. Jay, you're a master of your craft.
Posted by Peter Skov @ 11/03/2001 01:22 AM EST

Not a very good song. Very boring. Very repetitive.
Posted by Sizzleteen @ 10/31/2001 03:34 PM EST

Someone here said this song is heartbreaking and that's the sentiment I'd use. When Jay sings "I'm singing my heart out but you were so out of range" it tugs at my heartstrings, definitely. And Jay's plaintive voice just pulls at them more.

I think this is a truly wonderful song!

Posted by Kim @ 10/31/2001 12:26 AM EST

What makes Sloan so cool is their multi modal musik making. They can rock with the best of them, but can also create emotional masterpieces like this song. If there's a better band on the planet these days i haven't heard them. Well done Jay.
Posted by Scott @ 10/28/2001 11:54 PM EST

This sounds a bit like Leo Sayer of the 70's - or is it just me?
Posted by adrian @ 10/26/2001 12:24 PM EST

The way some of you flip out your caual remarks as to your approval or dislike of a certain song blows me away. Some have obviously never written songs or know what goes into the making. I love Sloans' rocking stuff more than anybody but even more appreciate the way they can take something beautiful and intimate and not be afraid to share it w/ us. You should know by now that each Sloan album has slight directional changes as they mature musically. Try being kind with your comments to the artists who gave you you're favorite music and made you a fan in the 1st place. Excellent and deeply touching song for a songs'sake, Jay.
Posted by Andy Milstead @ 10/24/2001 12:07 PM EST

I like this song a lot. It did strike me as a lot more slow and sad than anything else Sloan has put out, but at the same time, is it really possible to categorize Sloan's style? Every member brings a different element to the band. In my opinion, Jay's always been the softer, slower, ballad contributor. I suppose Sloan's just broadening their, and in turn our, horizons. If it comes from Sloan, we listen, we love. :)
Not a big fan of the new album (yet), but this song is one of my favourites.
Thanks, Jay.

Posted by Nav @ 10/17/2001 11:49 AM EST

stop berating jay for writing a sad song. it could be worse, sloan could go emo.

just becuase a band makes a song that everyone just might like instead of the stuff that you, the " underapreciated, no one but me in my hometown likes this music, so therefore i must be cooler thyan everyone else, oh dear god people cannot listen to sloan, no one can except me cuz i'm the only cool one dammit" fan does not make them sellouts. music is for everyone, even your momma

Posted by Brandon @ 10/10/2001 04:11 PM EST

Andrew? You e-mailed and told me to email you back but, I don't understand what you applied to me. Mentioning about havin' Sloan tickets and showing up in a french hat and black leathers and a stet of bongoes? And saying they have lost it all? Umm can you explain to me what all that means, please. Talk later.

-Mary Kathleen Mac Master

Posted by Sloanteddy^ @ 10/08/2001 05:56 PM EST

Andrew, please don't say that. Okay, sure you can have your opinion on it but, I really hate hearing Jay getting put down on his precious work he established towards us. His work is lovely to me, all of it.

Words is a work of gold. You combine them into your own meaning and thought. Words aren't to mess around with, all have a meaning for each other.

And Jay created his songs into his own prospection of things. He made it the way he liked it.

I say.. "admirable work Jay.. keep it up lad" and you sure will recieve love from meee! and others who truly believe in you. :)

This points strongest to the theory of Sloan taking the songwriting of Smeared and remodeling it to encompass everything else in their record collection apart from heavy guitars and pounding drums. My appetite is _REALLY_ whetted for the new album now.

I only heard a little verse of the song but,It probably reminds me when my going-to-be ex-boyfriend allways trying to give me more and more love to me to get me to stay with him..Gee..I don't know or have a clue, Laughs! I just think this way..silly me*.
