“I’ve dreamed of being a singer
since I was young. I feel like I’ve been given an incredible
opportunity to be the artist I’ve always wanted to be.
What I want most is to make music that means something, music
that can be enjoyed by everyone that hears it. I’ve
always been a fan of music that sticks with you long after
the song ends.” – Ryan Malcolm
The definition of ‘Home’ extends far beyond a
physically tangible entity. It’s a state of mind; a
sense of belonging. No matter where you find yourself in the
world, conjuring up the vision of home, results in an immediate
sensation warmth, security and calm. Ryan Malcolm’s
major label debut, Home, is deeply rooted in his perception
of Canada as home. On the cusp of traveling the nation and
the world, his boyish charm, dashing personality and an intense
perseverance to remain ‘the kid from Kingston’,
makes Ryan Malcolm a genuine artist in his own right.
Employing the ‘needle in a haystack’ theory,
Canadian Idol swept Canada like Stanley Cup seventh game fever,
with over 16,000 people signing up to sing their shot at becoming
the chosen one. From his first round audition in Ottawa, to
those nail biting blood rushing final moments with record
breaking television viewers peering in, Ryan Malcolm (affectionately
coined by press and public as ‘waiter boy’) was
crowned the inaugural Canadian Idol. He went from relative
unknown obscurity to a household name.
An accelerated career path has brought Ryan’s musical
talent to the foreground, affording him an excellent opportunity
to show what he’s been crafting for years in his hometown.
With a collection of artistic influences that spans The Beatles,
Dave Matthews, Billy Joel and Canadian musicians such as Sloan,
it’s a sure bet that Ryan’s style is one of versatility
and substance.
One lightning fast week after the country watched him win
the title, Ryan Malcolm was hauled up in a studio with some
of the best songwriters this country has to offer. An exercise
in concentration and pressure, Ryan was thrown into an intense
writer’s camp, which in the end served as a fertile
vacuum for the 11 songs captured. Star Of All The Planets
kicks off the album in true ‘This is Ryan Malcolm now’
style! Its groove and beat will make you instantly sit up
and take notice of this recording. Title track, Home, is a
Beatles inflected song, filled with hearfelt, hummable melody
with memorable lyric hinges like ‘In a world of walls,
you were like a door. Baby you’re my only home’.
International music icon Randy Bachman helped out, contributing
his legendary work to Ride, an instantly recognizable, guitar
driven tune. Fellow Canadian Idol finalist, Gary Beals, backs
Ryan up on a fantastically soulful rendition of Crowded House’s
classic Don’t Dream It’s Over. Absolutely Perfect,
co-written with Gavin Brown (Sarah Harmer, Three Days Grace,
Billy Talent), Rob Wells, Jess Cates and Adam Alexander, is
a hook laden, driving rock song with plenty of potential to
be heard far and wide across this country.
“The writer’s camp was one of the most empowering
things I’ve ever done. Growing up I worshipped musicians
like Randy Bachman. Getting the chance to have him contribute
to the record is a jaw dropping, priceless experience”
Comprised of rock, pop, soulful songs that accentuate the
rich texture of a voice the nation has already fallen in love
with, HOME, is a creative culmination of different styles
and influences. He has a voice that belies his age, drenched
in savory tone that matches his charismatic stage presence.
With an untouchable #1 selling single, Something More, and
impressive adds at Hot AC and AC radio, demands from across
the country and the world have flooded in for Ryan to perform.
It’s a captivating adventure with an entire nation of
supporters championing him the whole way. Meet Ryan Malcolm,
the real deal.
