Ferré sang “Twenty is the age
of awakening, the age of mayhem…”, and Andrée
Watters is living proof. At 20, this young singer-songwriter is
brimming with confidence, and with reason; after 3 years of hard
work, her first album entitled AW is finally completed. Three years
of learning, recording, writing and rewriting, that went by in
a flash for this Quebec native.
Since her professional debut at the age of 15 in the musical “Noël à Québec”,
everything started falling into place. The following summer, she won first place
in the “Jeunes Talents d’Expo-Cité” contest and placed
third at the national level. This recognition gave her the confidence necessary
to pursue her dream : a life dedicated to music.
At 17, she took the plunge. Leaving friends and family behind, she rented an
apartment and moved to Montreal. While many make their debut singing in clubs,
Andrée was lucky enough to begin working in a studio. She recorded advertising
jingles and sang back up on “ Wrap le rap” for Les Mecs Comiques,
with whom she also performed on shows like La Fureur and Le Grand Blond avec
un show sournois.
During the same period, Andrée began working with Fred St-Gelais at studio
La Chambre. Every weekend, locked away in the studio, she worked on songs written
for her. But slowly, she started developing her own writing skills and began
collaborating with Fred St-Gelais on some songs until, shyly at first, she proposed
her very first song : “J’t’aimerai quand même”.
Although she has a lot to learn from the experienced musician surrounding her
(Nicolas Maranda, Denis Courchesne and Fred St-Gelais), Andrée keeps tight
control over the creative process. She is present during every stage of production
and approves the selection of samples. She also suggests melodies and sounds
and makes sure that the song is exactly like what she had in mind while writing
it.
Her sound suits her perfectly : catchy tunes, aggressive guitar riffs that reveal
the wildness of her youth and samples that follow the current international pop
trend.
“ You can’t cheat when you sing your own lyrics because they are
a reflection of yourself ” says Andrée. She talks about love, real
life stories, personal observations…and time. There lies Andrée’s
obsession. Time is universal, time is…timeless, and Andrée has something
to say about it : “Wake Up! Life is Short!”. According to her, “people
should try to live a fulfilling life, avoid being trapped in a humdrum existence
and dare to take the plunge”. Andrée Watters is definitely not in
a hurry but her thirst for knowledge and her desire to speak up are pushing her
a little further everyday along the path she has chosen : Music. |
